Facilitation
Designing and facilitating leadership offsites and workshops: decisions and commitment, not just a good time
A leadership offsite takes time, energy and often a significant budget. It has to deliver more than a pleasant break: a shared vision, clear priorities, commitments that are kept. RE-LIER designs and facilitates offsites and workshops that serve a specific business challenge, putting the group’s collective intelligence to work.
When we are called in
- the creation of a new entity or subsidiary, when a common direction is needed and every team has to come on board;
- a new appointment, to lay the foundations of leadership with the team;
- the rollout of a new strategy or an organisational change;
- the annual offsite of a leadership team, including international teams;
- the launch of a transformation (agile, management by objectives, new ways of working).
Our approach
Each offsite or workshop is designed as a journey. Each step delivers a concrete result (a shared diagnosis, a vision, priorities) that feeds the next, right through to each person’s commitments.
1. Co-design
1. Framing with the leader
Clarifying the business challenge, the expected outcomes and the leader’s message. The session is built with you, not copied from a template.
2. Design
2. Designing the sequence
A timed agenda, formats chosen for each step, ready-to-use materials, and a common thread that ties it all together.
3. Facilitate
3. Running it with the group
A safe setting where everyone can speak, a good pace, and attention to what is happening in the group so it can be worked with.
4. Follow through
4. Embedding after the offsite
A write-up of the group’s outputs, commitments that are followed up, and if needed ongoing support for the leadership team.
Varied formats, chosen for each step
Surfacing ideas
World café, open space, mapping changes in the environment: so that everyone contributes and the group’s ideas emerge.
Building awareness
Stakeholder empathy maps, the ladder of inference, “What? So what? Now what?” debriefs: to see your own blind spots.
Practising
Leadership dojo and role-plays on difficult management conversations: to try out new ways of showing up.
Deciding and steering
Purpose, 100-day roadmap, objectives and key results (OKRs), collective planning: to leave with decisions.
And because a team is also built informally, we include team-building time: games, creative challenges, outdoor activities.
Some examples
Setting the course for a new subsidiary
The context
A telecoms group creates a subsidiary with investors. The teams are anxious about what lies ahead.
The offsite
A launch event bringing together all employees: purpose, promises to stakeholders, values and priorities for the first 100 days, built with them.
The result
Teams who take ownership of the project, and a subsidiary launched on schedule.
Turning a multi-country leadership team into a team
The context
A newly created European company brings together executives from several countries and a holding company.
The offsite
Work on mutual expectations between entities, debriefed live to make silo reflexes visible, followed by defining shared values.
The result
A team that consciously chooses to build together rather than fall back into a client-supplier logic.
Preparing leaders for change
The context
An international company embarks on major changes affecting its regional leaders and their teams.
The offsite
Three days to understand how the environment is changing, step into each stakeholder’s shoes and practise difficult conversations in a dojo.
The result
Leaders better prepared to guide their teams through change.
